A yellow weather warning for rain covering much of the east of Scotland has been issued for Thursday, with downpours expected across several areas.
Met Office forecasters confirmed sheets of heavy rain are expected to blow across Edinburgh, Perth and Dundee between 4am and 10am.
Areas as far south as the Scottish Borders and as far north as Angus could also be affected by the inclement conditions with up to 40mm of rain falling in certain areas.
Experts warned some areas could be at an increased risk of flooding after another warning for thunderstorms was issued on Tuesday.
The Met Office forecast read: “Outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, are possible early on Thursday morning.
“Accumulations of 20 to 30mm are likely in a few hours with a chance of up to 40mm in one or two places.
“Following recent wet weather, this brings a risk of flooding and possible disruption to transport. The rain is expected to turn more showery later in the morning.”
Several parts of Scotland were affected by increased water levels and lashing rain on Tuesday, while rumbles of thunder were also heard in some areas.
STV weather presenter Philip Petrie said the current area of low pressure dominating the remainder of the forecast this week could lead to further warnings being issued, but added it was near “impossible” to predict when the next one would be put in place.
“For the rest of this week our weather is dominated by low pressure, which is spiralling out to the west of the UK like a washing machine, pushing frontal systems continuously across the country,” he said.
“Along with the showers there is a chance of thunder and also some hail. At the moment there is a lot of uncertainty as to where and when the worst thunder strikes will be, so any warnings that are issued are likely to be on the day.
“Things are looking pretty similar over the next couple of days so we will be keeping an eye out for further warnings.”
