1917, which follows two young soldiers tasked to hand-deliver a message to a battalion during the height of the First World War, was penned by Mendes and Glasgow-born screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns – who first gained work experience on the set of Taggart.

Thanking his cast, crew and “the great” cinematographer Roger Deakins, Mendes dedicated the award to his grandfather.

Scots superstar Brian Cox also came out tops at the 77th annual ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

The 73-year-old Dundonian took home the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama for his portrayal as media magnate Logan Roy on HBO’s Succession.

The show – which shot an episode in Scotland – also won Best Television Series – Drama.

Cox, who saw out competition from Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington, Mr Robot’s Rami Malek, Tobias Menzies for The Crown and Pose’s Billy Porter, said he was “shocked” to win after 60 years in the entertainment business.
