Marti Pellow and Lorraine Kelly on 'special' Love is All Around single for breast cancer

The stars joined the Change+Check choir to record new rendition of Wet Wet Wet hit to raise money for breast cancer.

Lorraine Kelly and Marti Pellow have spoken about joining a “special” choir rendition of Love Is All Around to raise money for breast cancer.

The stars joined the Change+Check choir to record the hit Wet Wet Wet single on its 30th anniversary.

The group features over 100 women and one man, who discovered they had breast cancer after watching Lorraine’s chat show.

Proceeds from the single are going to Breast Cancer Awareness UK.

Lorraine’s Change+Check campaign is now in its sixth year. It encourages women to check their breasts for changes and stresses the importance of seeing a GP if they notice anything unusual.

The TV presenter recalled that she and Marti had come up with the idea after meeting at TV chef James Martin’s house.

Lorraine told What’s On Scotland: “It’s 30 years of ‘Love is All Around’ and we wanted to do something extra special.”

Marti said: “I was in this studio a year ago, and I bumped into Marie from the choir. I said ‘what are you doing here?’. She said ‘we’re the Change and Check choir.’

“I came to the 30th anniversary of ‘Love is all around’ and I wanted to do something special with the song.

“I’m going out on tour and I want to do all of that, but I wanted to do something different with the song, give it a purpose.

“I see ‘Love is all around’ like a tree, and this is a wee branch to the tree.”

Lorraine added: “The song means so much to so many people, but the new version gives it a whole new meaning in that context.”

Marti said: “That’s exactly what it is. And the femininity now lives in the fabric of the song for the first time as well. And I think that balance is what’s resonating with people.”

Lorraine recalls the moment Marti Pellow surprised the choir in the studio for the recording session.

“They didn’t know! Honestly, I thought there would be bits of Marti scattered all over the room  – they went nuts,” she said.

The choir members thanked the Wet Wet Wet frontman for joining their mission to boost awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection.

Hazel Holland said: “He’s amazing. He’s so thoughtful. Everything he’s doing, he’s doing for free for the charity to raise money for secondary breast cancer awareness, which is just incredible.”

Mairi Milne added: “The words resonate with us, we understand them. Some of us remember the song from the first time round and sang it then so we knew the words then.

“But it is; it’s really special for us all to be involved, and we have fun doing it, so that makes all the difference.”

Lorraine said she is very proud of her work with the Change+Check campaign.

She said: “Every one of these women is going through their own difficult time because a lot of them are living with breast cancer.

“A lot of them, thank goodness, are cleared because they watched the campaign, got the symptoms, got checked, and now they’re here with us, which is fantastic.”

The Change&Check choir will perform Love Is All Around at the Royal Variety Performance at Royal Albert Hall on Friday, November 22.

Watch Lorraine and the Change + Check campaign on weekdays from 9am on STV and STV Player with the charity single Love Is All Around, available to download now here.
