Deacon Blue have postponed both remaining Scottish dates in their tour over Covid fears as the Omicron variant continues to spread throughout the country.

The band, fronted by Ricky Ross, were due to play at the P&J Arena in Aberdeen on Saturday and the Hydro in Glasgow on Sunday as the last two remaining concerts on their tour of UK & Ireland.

But it was confirmed on Thursday that they will no longer go ahead with Ross hitting out at authorities saying “People shouldn’t be asked to attend gigs just now.”

Taking to Twitter he said: “We’re disappointed authorities didn’t make any decision regarding live concerts in the wake of Omicron spread.

“However it’s clear to us Deacon Blue should not be playing and people shouldn’t be asked to attend gigs just now. We’re postponing our last two shows.

“All details about rescheduled shows will be posted on our social media channels today by 4p.m. Sorry to bring you this news, but we had to make the right decision for the good of everyone.

“We think we have.”

The Glasgow and Aberdeen dates were due to be the band’s last two shows of a 26 night tour that kicked-off at the start of November.

The Real Gone Kid and Chocolate Girl singers are due to return to Scotland with a concert at Edinburgh Castle next summer.

Fellow Scottish rockers Del Amitri also announced they were also postponing their shows soon after.

On the band’s official Twitter account they said: We’re very sorry but on seeing the rapidly rising infection levels we’ve had to take the incredibly hard decision to postpone all our remaining Scottish shows.

“Please hold on to your tickets and we hope to re-schedule these shows just as soon as we can.”

The Nothing Ever Happens and Always The Last To Know singers were due to play in Stirling on Thursday, Edinburgh on Friday and Glasgow on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday’s planned gig at the Barrowland’s was to be a free show for NHS and key workers.
