Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish and Nirvana: Stars raise money for LA wildfires

Between performances, survivors of the LA wildfire, which has killed 28 people, shared their experiences of losing their homes.

Celebrities have joined forces at a charity concert to raise money for victims of the recent LA wildfires.

Stars including Billie Eilish, Katy Perry and Green Day performed at FireAid, a benefit concert featuring stunning performances, powerful stories from survivors, and reminders of the devastation caused by the fires.

The remaining members of nineties grunge band Nirvana also surprised fans by reuniting with a series of guest female vocalists, including Joan Jett and Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon.

The Eaton and Palisades fires, sparked by strong winds during one of California’s driest years on record, have killed 28 people and destroyed over 12,000 buildings since January 7 – making them some of the state’s most destructive fires in history.

At the Kia Forum in Los Angeles on Thursday night, rock band Green Day took the stage with Oscar winner Billie Eilish, and rapper Dr Dre made a surprise appearance with Anderson Paak.

Lady Gaga also performed her hits and played a new song on the piano.

“It’s just for tonight, it’s just for you,” she said. “Time is a healer.”

Later, Gwen Stefani performed, followed by Katy Perry, who was joined by the Pasadena Choir.

An hour after the Kia Forum show, another concert kicked off at the nearby Intuit Dome, with actor Samuel L Jackson as presenter.

Pink performed a medley of her hits, followed by Stevie Nicks, who shared the story of how her Pacific Palisades home survived the fires.

Soul and funk legends Earth, Wind & Fire then played That’s the Way of the World and September.

Between sets, survivors shared their experiences of losing their homes, with their stories broadcast throughout the arena, both live and in video packages.
