Matt Damon hails 'epic' Scotland fans in Boston as World Cup highlight

Hollywood star Matt Damon has praised the Tartan Army’s antics in Boston during a late-night talk show appearance.

The actor, who recently starred in Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey, is from Massachusetts and had high praise for the Scottish fans.

Tens of thousands of the Tartan Army descended on Boston last month for the World Cup – the first time the Scots had played in the tournament since 1998.

Scotland beat Haiti 1-0 before losing to Morocco and Brazil, and were eventually eliminated from the competition at the group stage.

But fans delighted Boston locals, with the city’s mayor establishing a sister-city partnership with Glasgow.

And the good vibes were not missed by Damon, who praised the Tartan Army as “epic” in an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

The 55-year-old also shared a hilarious anecdote he heard from the Scots’ time in Boston.

Damon said: “It was like Scotland, the Scottish fans in Boston. That was one of my favourite storylines in this World Cup. It was so awesome.

Meyers responded: “All I heard was friends of mine who have kids in college in Boston were, like, it was the greatest time of my life.”

Damon added: “I heard a story there was a bunch of Scots outside a liquor store, and a woman walked in and bought a bottle of water, and they booed her.

“It was epic. I love that. I heard that we instantly declared ourselves a sister city with one of the cities in Scotland.

“It was like, ‘Oh, yeah, you guys are just like us.”
