Primal Scream join Dexys for song 'Enough is Enough' in support of RMT rail strikers

Scottish music legends Primal Scream have collaborated on the release of a new song ‘Enough is Enough’ in solidarity with striking rail workers.

The band’s Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes have joined forces with Dexys’ Kevin Rowland and Sean Read plus Jesus and Mary Chain bassist Douglas Hart to produce the new song.

The track was created in support of striking workers with the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) trade union and opens with the line: “We’re for welfare, not for warfare.”

The song’s lyrics blast “socialism for the rich, capitalism for the poor”, and say “while we fight each other we’re going nowhere”.

It was written after a plea from the RMT union on Twitter to Dexys Kevin Rowland and the collaboration was then born.

The union said: “The song was inspired by both the RMT and the nascent Enough Is Enough campaign. As such, all proceeds go to the RMT dispute fund and huge thanks and eternal gratitude go to both bands, in particular Kevin Rowland and Bobby Gillespie and also to former The Jesus and Mary Chain bassist Douglas Hart for producing a wonderful video.”

Further RMT strike action with members from Network Rail is expected on November 5, 7 and 9 with Scotrail announcing a limited number of services are set to run.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: “Our industrial action campaign on ScotRail will continue until we can find a just settlement to our dispute.

“We are open to meaningful talks with ScotRail at any time to discuss all the outstanding issues.”

David Simpson, ScotRail Service Delivery Director, said: “Once again, it’s really disappointing to see the dispute between Network Rail and the RMT result in more widespread disruption across the whole Great Britain rail network at a time when we need to be encouraging more people back to the railway.

“For ScotRail, it’s going to mean that we won’t be able to operate the vast majority of our services, which we know will be really frustrating for our customers.

“ScotRail customers should expect significant disruption to services on strike days, as well as on the days after industrial action.

“We’re advising customers to seek alternative means of transport and to only travel if you really need to on the days of strike action. Customers should check your journey in advance to make sure your train is running if you’re travelling on one of the days following strike action.”
