What's the story? Balamory to return after more than 20 years

Produced between 2002 until 2005, the show will receive a revamp but is to be inspired by the original series.

The ionic Scottish children’s television show Balamory is to return after 20 years.

CBeebies announced two new series of the iconic show will air in 2026 and will once again be filmed in Scotland, in original location Tobermory or other locations such as Rothesay.

First produced between 2002 until 2005, the show will receive a revamp but is to be inspired by the original series which centres around a nursery school on the island.

BBC Children’s and Education said it is interested in ideas from producers in which some of the original characters will be included in the series alongside a host of new faces.

Scottish actor Julie Wilson Nimmo, husband to Still Game co-creator and star Greg Hemphill, could be set for a return as teacher Miss Hoolie.

The two series will consist of ten episodes lasting approximately 14 minutes each, with further information and cast details to be announced.

Kate Morton, head of commissioning 0-6 for BBC Children’s and Education, said: “A whole new generation will discover and enjoy Balamory as we bring families together with this new update for CBeebies.

“It will be a real treat for parents who grew up with the show to now introduce their little ones to the brightly coloured world getting to know a host of old and new characters together.”
