Wheels or doors? The bizarre debate sweeping the internet this week

A Twitter user asked his followers if there are more doors or wheels in the world and divided the internet.

Of the many lessons our online-saturated world has taught us, one came in focus this week – it doesn’t matter how ridiculous or trivial, we love a debate.

Ryan Nixon, a Twitter user from Auckland in New Zealand, surely did not expect the worldwide reaction when he took to social media on Saturday for help in answering a simple, if slightly unusual query spawning from a daft conversation with his friends…

Ryan posted: “My mates and I are having the STUPIDEST debate… And I am here for it.

“Do you think there are more doors or wheels in the world?”

Ryan’s poll received a staggering 223,347 votes and spawned all manner of memes, passionate debate and hard-hitting analysis of the topic.

The hashtag #wheelsvsdoors has 64.5million views on TikTok alone.

Just when you think you’ve settled on your position, a new curveball hits you – what about the doors on advent calendars? Are barrels wheels?

Celebrities, brands and football clubs were among those getting in on the internet’s latest distracting debate.

When the dust settled Wheels won out with 53.6% of respondents, but arguments will rumble on and on.

It recalls other polarising viral issues such as ‘The Dress’ in 2015, when a Scottish student asked the world whether her friend’s dress was white and gold, or blue and black.

Within hours, celebrities as famous as Taylor Swift had their say.

But while there was a definitive answer to that question, it’s fair to say that despite the herculean efforts of some on Twitter, TikTok and otherwise, we’ll never have an objectively true answer.

Obviously we know this – but it won’t stop us talking about it.
