All Police Scotland fast response cars to have defibrillators after teen’s death Keiran's Legacy

Every police fast response vehicle in Scotland will carry a defibrillator after a donation from the family of a teenager who was killed in a road accident.

Keiran McKandie died when his mountain bike was hit by a car in Moray in 2016.

Since then the 16-year-old’s parents have been campaigning to ensure more of the life-saving devices are close at hand when someone suffers a cardiac arrest.

Keiran’s mother Sandra, who founded the charity Keiran’s Legacy, said: “There are no words to describe how each day is without him. The main aspect of this charity is to allow him to live on and do something positive in his name.”

More than two hundred defibrillators have already been distributed across the north of Scotland and the charity says nine lives have been saved.

Now the tie-up with the police will take the campaign across Scotland.

Chief superintendent Louise Blakelock, head of road policing, said: “The nature of policing is such that you never know what you’re going to attend to, what you might come across on your journey or when you’re on patrol. We’re often the first on scene or we can be called to incidents where this equipment can be life-saving.”
