AOC ArchaeologyRemnants of the Middle Ages have surfaced during demolition work in Inverness city centre.
Archaeologists are investigating artefacts found below the site of a new housing development.
Highland Council hasn’t revealed details of the discovery at an old charity shop on the city’s Church Street, however a member of its archaeology team described the find as “very important”.
Council archaeologist Kirsty Cameron said: “This is a very important discovery for the city and, once the work on site has been completed, all the samples and artefacts recovered are analysed.”
The development is part of a number of projects taking place to reshape Inverness city centre and create new homes.
The site will be transformed into ten single-bedroom flats for rent and ground-floor shops.
Allan Maguire, head of development and regeneration at the council, said: “What we are doing in all these projects is working with partners to a common aim – the recovery of Inverness city centre.
“These projects are all great examples of the public and private sectors working together to regenerate the city centre, stimulating the economic recovery of Inverness and providing new high-quality homes.”
