A European elk born at a wildlife park has been named by keepers.

Staff at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s Highland Wildlife Park, near Aviemore, Highlands, named the three-month-old elk Egret.

They chose the bird themed name with the female calf’s dad, Raven, in mind.

The youngster is doing well, weighing at 53kg, and can be seen in the park’s drive-through reserve eating willow and spending time with her dad.

Earlier this month keepers found mum Cas unresponsive and veterinary teams advised she should be put to sleep to prevent her suffering.

Historically native to Scotland, Eurasian elk are the largest living deer species and are still found across much of Europe.
