Bomb squad called to police station after 'potentially explosive devices' handed in

Two “potentially explosive historic devices” handed in at Kirkwall police station in Orkney have been found to be “not viable”, police have said.

The station was forced to close its doors on Monday after a member of the public handed in the two devices.

In a statement, police said the station on Burgh Road has reopened after being cordoned off.

Officers from the police’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team arrived at the station and inspected the devices.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “EOD attended Kirkwall Police Station after two potentially explosive historic ordnance devices were handed in on Sunday, January 19, 2025.

“The items were assessed and found to be not viable.”
