A boy has been taken to hospital in serious condition after being hit by a car in the Outer Hebrides.

The nine-year-old was struck by a Mitsubishi car whilst crossing the B892 in Balivanich at around 4.40pm on Wednesday.

Emergency services were alerted, and the boy was airlifted to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow where he is in serious but stable condition.

The road remains closed as of 1.30pm on Thursday while investigations are carried out by officers.

Police Scotland is urging anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward.

Sgt Christopher Donaldson said: “We are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the area around the time, especially those who have dashcam, as footage captured may assist our investigation.

“We believe a brown car passed the child, who was with his young friend at the time, just prior to the incident. We’d be grateful if that driver would contact police as well.

“Information can be passed to police via 101. Please quote incident number 2214 of Wednesday, October 29, 2025 when calling.”
