Climber falls 80m into rocks while another injured at reindeer paddocks

A climber suffered leg injuries after falling 80m into rocks while another had to be rescued after being hurt at reindeer paddocks in the Cairngorms.

The Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team was called out to recover the casualties simultaneously on Tuesday.

The first call, at 1pm, say the rescuers sent out to Coire an t-Sneachda – where a climber triggered an avalance earlier this month.

A man, in his 30s, fell around 80m in Coire an t-Sneachda, sliding on compacted snow below Jacob’s Ladder and sustaining injuries to his chest and lower legs.

In a separate incident at around the same time, a woman in her 50s sustained leg injuries in a fall in the reindeer paddocks above Glenmore Forest.

The Prestwick Rescue 199 Coastguard helicopter flew to assist but was hampered by high winds meaning the first casualty had to be stretchered out.

The helicopter was able to carry out an evacuation of the second climber to the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue base where an ambulance was waiting.
