HM Coastguard has concluded their search for a capsized yacht in Sutherland as police continue their investigation.

HM Coastguard responded to reports of debris washing ashore from a suspected yacht in Strathan Bay, near Lochinver, on January 5.

Search efforts continued into the weekend until a final search was completed on January 7, before HM Coastguard stood down on Monday morning.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard confirmed that an “extensive” maritime and shoreline search of the area was carried out with the assistance of Achiltibuie and Ullapool Coastguard Rescue Teams, the all-weather lifeboat from Lochinver RNLI, and Coastguard helicopters from Stornoway and Inverness.

Police confirmed that enquiries to establish the full circumstances of the incident are “ongoing”.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.30pm on Saturday, January 6, 2024, we were made aware of a capsized yacht at Strathan Bay, Lochinver.

“Emergency services attended, including HM Coastguard and RNLI.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
