Crackdown on speeding drivers as 'motorist clocked at 119mph'

Police have issued a warning after motorists were reportedly clocked driving at speeds of up to 119mph in the Highlands.

Over the past week road policing officers have been carrying out high visibility patrols as part of Operation Cedar (Challenge, Educate, Detect and Reduce), which aims to tackle poor driving standards, educate motorists about their driving, and reduce casualties on Scotland’s roads.

Police said two men, aged 26 and 27, were arrested for suspected drug-driving offences on the A9 in Helmsdale and in Conon Bridge.

Three men, aged 58, 25 and 21, were charged with dangerous driving offences after allegedly being detected at 119mph on the B817 near Alness, 114mph on the A9 at Arpafeelie, and 46mph in a 20mph zone outside Hilton Primary School in Inverness respectively.

A 39-year-old man was also charged for allegedly driving a LGV dangerously on the A82 between Corran Ferry and Fort William.

Inspector Donnie Mackinnon said: “These notable detections give considerable cause for concern and highlight there are some who continue to take risks and place themselves and others in danger.

“Our message is clear, this behaviour will not be tolerated and we will continue to carry out enforcement to make our roads safer across the Highland and Islands.

“It is vital that as a driver, you consider the consequences of your actions and the impact they will have on you, your family, other road users and your community.
