A person is in hospital after a crash involving a lorry and two cars closed part of the A9 during “severe” warnings for snow and ice.

Emergency services were called to the scene near Thurso at Shalmstry around 7.14am on Monday involving three vehicles including a lorry.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service deployed two appliances to scene with one person taken by ambulance to Caithness General Hospital.

The collision comes amid weather warnings for snow and ice for most of Scotland.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 7.14am on Monday, January 6 to reports of a collision involving two vehicles on the A9 near Thurso.

“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances and firefighters assisted emergency service partners at the scene of a collision which involved one HGV and two cars.

“One casualty was in the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 7.08am today to attend a road traffic collision on the A9.

“We dispatched two ambulances to the scene and transported one patient to Caithness General Hospital.”

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
