Dornoch Highland Games cancelled as police probe finances

Dornoch Highland Games has been cancelled amid a police investigation into its finances.

Organisers behind the long-standing Sutherland event said with “deep regret” that it would not go ahead “due to circumstances outwith our control”.

Police Scotland confirmed an investigation into “financial irregularities” at Dornoch Highland Games is under way.

A message on the games’ website from president Jimmy MacDonald says: “It is with deep regret that the committee of Dornoch Highland Games announces the cancellation of this year’s games, which were scheduled to take place on Friday August 7 at the Meadows Park Playing Field, Dornoch.

“This is due to circumstances outwith our control. We sincerely apologise for this disappointment.”

According to its website, the games have been held every year since 1835, except war years “and one unfortunate rainy day”.

The games feature a variety of competitions for piping, Highland dancing, tossing the caber, putting the ball and throwing the hammer, as well as fairground attractions and children’s games.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “On Sunday 19 July 2026, we received a report of potential financial irregularities having happened in the Dornoch area between 2024 and 2026.

“Inquiries are at an early stage and ongoing.”
