A railway line in the Highlands has been closed after the tracks were hit by severe flooding.

Heavy rainfall overnight caused a “significant” amount of silt and floodwater to wash onto the Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh line, which has been closed between Achnasheen and Achanalt as a result

Network Rail shared a picture from Achanalt station showing the track completely submerged in water.

The operator said it would be working to clear the silt from the tracks, but debris brought by the floodwater is blocking the train and station.

Engineers have been sent to assess the damage with the inspection expected to take around four hours.

Network Rail said: “We now have a team on site at Achanalt working to clear the debris and inspect the condition of the track and level crossing underneath, before we’re able to reopen the Kyle line.

“We’ll share another update soon, but it’s expected to take at least three to four hours”.

Train tickets are being accepted on CityLink buses between Inverness and Kyle of Lochlash and also on Stagecoach North services between Inverness and Dingwall..
