iStockPeople in the west Highlands of Scotland were shaken awake in the early hours of the morning on Tuesday by an earthquake.
The seismic event occurred just after 3am on Tuesday in the Spean Bridge area and was felt by “several people” in Roybridge, Inverlair, Fort William and villages within a 20 km radius of the epicentre.
The British Geological Survey measured the earthquake at a magnitude of 2.5 and a depth of 5km.
Residents reported hearing a “deep rumble” for five seconds and a “small explosion underground”.
Others felt a “slight shuddering” inside their homes.
