A doctor from the Highlands has been charged after he allegedly posted numerous disparaging messages on social media in a bid to discredit his son’s rape victim.
Officers charged Dr Andrew McFarlane, a GP, on Wednesday in connection with communication offences.
The 61-year-old’s son, Daniel McFarlane, was found guilty of raping Ellie Wilson and was jailed for five years in 2022.
He received two convictions for rape and one for attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
The General Medical Council launched an investigation of their own earlier this year after they were notified of comments made by McFarlane, in which he reportedly called Wilson a liar and manipulator, and accused her of blackmail.
The rape survivor, who waived her anonymity, has gone on to campaign for justice reform and for survivors of male sexual violence.
Police Scotland confirmed a 61-year-old man was charged in connection with the incident and is due to appear in court at a later date.
