Hundreds of islanders still without internet access after outage

Openreach said hundreds of customers in the Shetland and Orkney islands are facing disruption.

Hundreds of islanders are still without internet access after a major outage on Saturday.

Openreach revealed on Saturday that broadband services were being disrupted for customers in the Faroe, Shetland, and Orkney islands.

The company said that it is the result of damage to a subsea cable from Orkney to Banff, on Saturday morning.

It’s understood that it was a Shefa-2 cable that was affected, which is part of the cables owned by Faroese Telecom.

As engineers began working on the issue, Openreach revealed on Sunday that it was only hundreds of customers who have been impacted, and only in the Shetland and Orkney islands.

They also revealed that landline calls were not impacted. Repairs remain ongoing.

An Openreach spokesperson said: “We’ll continue to assess, but customer broadband impact is more limited than initially thought, with hundreds of customers disrupted. Landline calls were never impacted, and we’ll continue to work hard to resolve and repair.”

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
