An investigation has been launched after a suspected unexploded bomb was discovered at an oil pipeline in the North Sea.
Shell confirmed it is working with a third party to investigate after the unexploded ordnance was discovered during a routine inspection of the Flags pipeline, approximately 40 miles of the east of Shetland, in December 2024.
The Flags pipeline connects the Brent field to the Scottish mainland.
The company confirmed a guard vessel has been appointed as the pipeline continues to operate normally.
A spokesperson said: “We are working with a third party to further investigate and fully identify the object.
“We continue to liaise with relevant authorities including the Maritime Coastguard Agency, and have positioned a guard vessel at the location.”
The Maritime Coastguard Agency has been contacted for comment.
