A man who murdered an Orkney woman in New Zealand when he was a teenager has been denied parole.
Jahche Broughton killed 26-year-old backpacker Karen Aim in the town of Taupo in 2008.
Ms Aim left a party in the early hours of the morning to walk to her accommodation on January 18.
Broughton, who was 14 years old at the time, was at a school smashing windows with a bat when he saw Ms Aim. He followed her and attacked her with the weapon. She later died of her injuries in hospital.
In 2009, Broughton was sentenced to life in prison.
The New Zealand Herald reported Broughton appeared before the Parole Board for the first time last week.
He is currently in Te Ao Marama, the Māori Focus Unit.
In April a psychologist was said to have assessed him as falling into a group that pose a “very high risk of violent or general reoffending”.
He is awaiting a placement on an intensive rehabilitation programme scheduled to begin early next year.
The board was of the view Broughton should commence a programme believed to be scheduled for February.
Parole was declined, with the board adding: “There is much work for Mr Broughton to complete.”
