A Labrador has been rescued after falling ill while on Ben Nevis after it was suspected she ate cannabis which had been discarded on the mountain trail.
The dog, named Tokyo, was hiking up Scotland’s tallest peak with her owner Christina Bluhme – a dog trainer from Surrey – when she lost the use of her legs and began drifting in and out of consciousness.
Fearing the worst, Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team was called to help and volunteers carried the unconscious 25kg pet down the mountain on a stretcher to a local vet to receive treatment.
The dog trainer said: “There is simply no way I could have got her safely off the mountain.
“Carrying a 25kg Labrador down Ben Nevis was impossible on my own, and their kindness, professionalism and calm support meant everything.”
Ms Bluhme said Tokyo was “critically ill after ingesting what the vets believe was cannabis left on the trail”.
She described the experience as “one of the most frightening days I’ve ever experienced”, adding, “I genuinely thought I was going to lose her”.
Lochaber MRTFollowing the care she received at Crown Vets, Ms Bluhme said Tokyo made a full recovery by the following day.
She praised the efforts of mountain rescuers and those who cared for Tokyo, adding: “We feel incredibly lucky.
“From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone at Lochaber Mountain Rescue and to the veterinary team who cared for Tokyo.
“You were there when we needed you most, and I will never forget your compassion and dedication.
“A little reminder to fellow dog owners: please be aware that discarded drugs and other toxic substances can sometimes be found even in the most beautiful outdoor places.
“It was something I never imagined we would encounter.”
Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team said they’re pleased Tokyo made a full recovery from the incident.
Lochaber MRTA spokesperson said: “Following a request to assist a collapsed dog on Sunday, we’re pleased to confirm that Tokyo has made a full recovery, having been cared for at Crown Vets!
“It’s now suspected that Tokyo, a usually very fit and active working dog, had ingested something that made her critically unwell.
“Many thanks to Crown Vets for their support, and to Tokyo’s owner for the update and photos.”
