A man has been arrested over a crash that killed a pensioner in the Highlands.

The 47-year-old has been charged over the collision between a Peugeot 2008 and an articulated lorry that took place on the Dava Moor road around four miles north of Grantown-on-Spey in October last year.

The driver of Peugeot, 86-year-old Matthew Donnell, died at the scene and his passenger, an 81-year-old woman, was seriously injured.

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed the arrest on Monday.

He said: “A 47-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal road traffic collision which occurred on the A939 Dava Moor road on 7th October 2020.

“The collision, which happened about 4.5 miles north of Grantown-on-Spey, involved a Peugeot 2008 car and a DAF articulated lorry.

“The 86-year-old driver of the car, Matthew Donnell from Grantown on Spey, died at the scene. An 81-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the car, was also seriously injured.

“A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and the 47-year-old man will appear at Inverness Sheriff Court at a later date.”

Sergeant David Miller said “I would like to thank everybody who has assisted with our investigation over the last few months. Our thoughts very much remain with Mr Donnell’s family and friends.”
