A man has been charged after more than £24,000 worth of heroin was seized from a car in Lerwick.

The 28-year-old was stopped on Commercial Street in the town just after 2pm on Sunday.

Police searched the Vauxhall Vectra and recovered a “large quantity” of the class A substance alongside £3,400 in cash.

The driver was later arrested and charged in connection with the incident, officers confirmed.

He is due to appear in Lerwick Sheriff Court on Monday.

Chief inspector Stuart Clemenson said: “I’d like to commend the excellent work of Road Policing, who carried out this stop and Lerwick CID who carried out the subsequent enquiries.

“We remain committed to using every tool and tactic at our disposal to prevent the sale and distribution of illegal drugs in our local communities.”
