A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a break-in at a cancer support centre in the Highlands.
Maggie’s Highlands on Old Perth Road, Inverness, had its doors and windows smashed in the early hours of Sunday morning. However, nothing was taken.
The incident happened around 2.50am at the facility at the Raigmore Hospital, just weeks after it had started welcoming people again after shutting down throughout lockdown.
The centre has had to close for a number of days, as repairs are carried out and a deep clean completed. In the meantime support will continue to be offered via phone and online, while a local hotel has given the use of a room for the centre’s psychologist to see people face to face.
Police confirmed a 26-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.
He will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal and is expected to appear at Inverness Sheriff Court at a later date.
Inspector Nick Macrae said: “We would like to thank the members of the public for their assistance with our enquiries into this incident.”
Maggie’s provides practical, social and emotional support to people living with cancer, as well as to their family and friends.
Almost £14,000 has been raised by the community in response to the weekend’s events.
Andrew Benjamin, centre fundraising manager, said on Monday: “The support in the community has been incredible.”
