Man dies after falling overboard from boat off Orkney coast

The 22-year-old died shortly after being brought to shore from Scapa Flow on Thursday afternoon

A man has died after he went overboard from a boat off the coast of Orkney.

Stromness Lifeboat, with two lifeboat members, was launched to help the casualty in Scapa Flow at around 2.50pm on Thursday.

Police were also called to Stromness pier to provide assistance.

A 22-year-old man was transferred to medical responders on shore, and he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

Inspector David Hall said: “Around 2.50pm on Thursday, July 23, 2026, we were called to Stromness pier after a report that a man had fallen from a boat.

“Emergency services attended and the 22-year-old man was pronounced dead a short time later.

“Enquiries are ongoing and the death is not being treated as suspicious.”
