Meet the Scots boy defying brain condition to walk around house for charity

A four-year-old boy from Orkney with a brain condition is bravely raising money for charity by doing laps around the house.

Gregor Corse was born with a neurological condition which affects his balance and motor skills, but surprised family members by learning to walk short distances independently in the last six months.

His mum, Iona, says Gregor has been working really hard with his independent walking outside, as he still uses a walking frame for balance and stability outdoors.

With the uneven surfaces and not so many stopping objects for him to walk to, he finds this a bit more difficult than walking indoors.

Gregor recently expressed an interest in trying “loops around the hoose” without his walker, which his family say is another huge step forward.

Now, the family is raising funds for Inclusive Orkney, a charity that provides activities and events for children with additional support needs.

Gregor has been able to attend many activities and sports events that he wouldn’t have otherwise been able to participate in without the charity’s help.

He is aiming to complete 30 loops for 30 days without his walker and has already completed two days of the challenge.

He did so in a kilt on the first day, and has even braved the pouring rain to get his steps in.

More than £3,775 has already been raised for the charity through a JustGiving page.

His mum said: “He is honestly the most inspirational little boy in this world – he keeps surprising us all with his capabilities, and proving to us all that, in the words of Gregor, ‘I can do it.’”

Gregor added: “Doing my walking is making me so happy for Inclusive Orkney and I love all the messages from people.”

Iona added: “We feel like we will never be able to do enough to thank this charity for everything they do for us – for giving Gregor such amazing opportunities in life and for being such fantastic support to his mummy too.

“At only four years old, Gregor is recognising how amazing this group is and how much they are doing for him.”

Inclusive Orkney said: “We are so proud of Gregor undertaking this walking challenge.

“The way both Gregor and his mum, Iona, overcome any obstacles and challenges is truly inspirational, and we couldn’t be happier that they are also raising money for Inclusive Orkney at the same time.

“Gregor is the happiest, most determined peedie boy, and he continues to amaze everyone with all the obstacles he’s overcoming.

“Gregor and Iona attend lots of our Inclusive Orkney events and we are so grateful they have chosen to raise money, helping us to provide more activities, raise awareness and provide some fun and laughter into the lives of children and teenagers, where life isn’t always easy.

“We wish Gregor all the best in the rest of his challenge and we’re with him every step of the way.”
