A missing monk who disappeared from an Orkney monastery is “presumed dead”, his church has said.

Justin Evans was last seen within Golgotha Monastery at Papa Stronsay shortly before midnight on Saturday.

The 24-year-old, who speaks with a New Zealand accent and was last seen wearing a white robe, is described as being around 6ft tall, with short hair and a dark beard.

Bishop Hugh Gilbert of the Diocese of Aberdeen says he has learned “with deep sadness” of the presumed death of Evans.

He also said that the police and coastguard have called off their searches; however, Police Scotland said that enquiries remain ongoing.

The official statement from Bishop Hugh read: “The Diocese has learned with deep sadness of the disappearance and presumed death of Justin Evans, also known as Brother Ignatius, aged 24, a member of the Redemptorist Community on the island of Papa Stronsay.

“It is believed that he came to harm in conditions involving the sea. The local police and coastguard services have now called off their searches.

“Brother Ignatius was known for his humility and charity, and our prayers are with his community and family at this difficult time.”

Inspector David Hall said: “Extensive enquiries are ongoing to trace Justin and as time passes concerns are growing.

“We are working with partner agencies and extensive searches are being carried out in the island area.

“I am now appealing for anyone may have visited the island and have any information on Justin or his whereabouts to contact us.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 1573 of April 12, 2026.
