Mountain bikers set off emergency beacon after being hit by 'wild weather'

A mountain rescue team were dispatched on Saturday after they were alerted by an emergency beacon in the Highlands.

Volunteers from Kintail Mountain Rescue were deployed at around 7.30pm on November 16 after two bikers were struck by a mix of rain, sleet, snow and cold temperatures on Affric-Kntail way.

The mountain rescuers located the stranded cyclists at the Alltbeithe Youth Hostel’s basic winter room. The pair were then transported back to “civilisation” and taken home by a volunteer.

A statement from Kintail Mountain Rescue read: “The team were called out last night at 7.30pm to help two mountain bikers who had set off their emergency beacon as they had got into trouble with some wild weather on the Affric-Kintail way.

“A hasty team was quickly deployed to Alltbeithe Youth Hostel where the pair were located and warmed up. On return to civilisation a kind team member dropped them off at their home, safe and sound. The team wish you both all the best and you did the right thing in calling for help.

“As wintry weather is now in full swing please remember to carry appropriate equipment in your day sacks in case of emergency and make sure you’ve checked the weather forecast as conditions on the hills can rapidly change. We’d also like to remind everyone that Alltbeithe Youth Hostel is closed for the winter.”
