They’re the unusual structures which have attracted worldwide attention by popping up unexpectedly in countries across the world – and now one has showed up in Scotland.
The sudden emergence of an 8ft monolith in Shetland has become the talk of the town.
Exactly how it came to be there and who is behind it remains a mystery.
The structure appeared outside graphic design and sign making company Art Machine in Lerwick last week, with owners Jonny Polson and Craig Sim baffled over where it appeared from.
Jonny said: “It just turned dark and we were aware of this structure standing here. We were pretty shocked. We were aware of these monoliths popping up all over the world, but we didn’t expect to find one in Shetland.”
Craig added: “I can’t see any rivets or fixes or anything. It’s really bizarre.”
The monoliths have hit the headlines across the globe, after the first one appeared last month in America’s Utah desert.
Numerous others were then spotted in countries including Belgium, Spain and Romania.
UK sightings include on the Isle of Wight and another strategically placed in the middle of stone circles in Cornwall.
The unusual structure has baffled locals in Lerwick.
“I have no idea I work next door at Shetland Janitorials and it just appeared and no-one knows. It’s just a mystery,” said one local.
“Yeah I’m not sure – a lot of folk are speculating it could be aliens,” added another.
Jonny and Craig have racked their brains but say they can’t work out where it’s come from.
“No idea at all. We just wonder if it’s a sign,” said Jonny.
Craig added: “I don’t know if it’s come out of the ground or fallen out of the sign or someone has just put it together, playing a prank on us, I don’t know.”
However Jonny thinks they should make the most of the sculpture and ensure it’s fit for the festive season.
He said: “I think we’ll probably put Christmas lights on it and decorate it as a Christmas display.”
