Ferry workers are being balloted over strike action amid an escalating dispute with an operator in Orkney.
On Friday, Unite the union announced that around 30 members who work for Orkney Ferries will consider walkouts, which could take place at the end of August.
Staff, including engineers, passenger and customer service assistants and chefs, have turned down “several” offers made by the ferry operator, Unite said, with the most recent 4% increase overwhelmingly rejected by members.
If the ballot, which will run from July 15 to August 5, is successful, inter-island ferry services in the Orkney Islands will be impacted.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Our members play a vital role in keeping this essential service operating. Orkney Ferries must stop trying to suppress workers’ wages and deliver a decent pay offer.
“Unite will fully back the Orkney Ferries workers in their campaign for fair pay.”
Orkney Ferries has been contacted for comment.
