Rescue teams battle through snowstorm to save injured climber and stranded campers

The first mission was to rescue a climber who had sustained a deep cut to their lower leg after catching it with their crampon.

Mountain rescue teams battled through a snowstorm to save an injured climber and stranded campers in simultaneous rescue missions.

Volunteers from Cairngorm MRT (CMRT) were called out on Monday evening as heavy snow and ice swept large parts of Scotland following a yellow warning issued by the Met Office.

The first mission was to rescue a climber who had sustained a deep cut to their lower leg after catching it with their crampon.

After treating the injury, the climber was helped back to the ski area through “deep snow and poor visibility”.

A second call at the same time came from a couple near The Saddle mountain who had intended to camp but sent an SOS message due to deteriorating conditions.

They were located and walked back to safety by volunteers through “arduous” underfoot conditions.

CMRT shared details of the rescues on social media, they said: “We were called out to two simultaneous rescues last night.

“The first was for a climber who had sustained a deep cut to their lower leg after catching it with their crampon. The climber was located on the West side of spot height 1141.

“After some rewarming and treatment of the wound the casualty was helped back to the ski area through deep snow and in poor visibility.

“The second was for a couple who had intended to camp near the Saddle but, in deteriorating condition, had raised an SOS message from their phone.

“After locating the couple and some rewarming they were walked out to safety through some arduous underfoot conditions.

“All safe and back at base 1.30am.”
