Retired Shetland teacher found dead in Greece after going missing while on holiday

Tributes have been paid to a retired Scottish teacher who died after going missing while on holiday with his wife in Greece.

Archie Green, from Shetland, disappeared on the Aegean island of Samos last week when he left to go for a walk.

The 73-year-old was last seen in the Marina area of Pythagoreio shortly after 9am and was reported missing to the Greek authorities by family members on Thursday, May 26.

Search and rescue teams were dispatched in an effort to locate him, but his body was later discovered in a nearby field.

The Hellenic Rescue Team of Samos, who organised the search operation, said they believed he had suffered a fall.

Lerwick Boating Club, of which Archie was a member, led the tributes.

In a short statement posted online, they wrote: “We are saddened by the dreadful news about one of our members, Archie Green, who died whilst travelling in Greece with his wife, Liz.

“Our condolences to all his family and friends. Much love to you all.”

The former biology teacher had previously taught at Anderson High School and was headmaster at Scalloway Junior High

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office added: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Greece and we are in contact with the local authorities.”
