Santa Express suspended until further notice after Flying Scotsman crash in Aviemore

This year’s Santa Express train has been suspended after the Flying Scotsman crashed.

Strathspey Railway announced that its annual Christmas service was off “until further notice”.

The heritage line usually runs its festive train experience from the start of autumn with many customers booking well in advance.

The service uses the same railway line as the Flying Scotsman which was involved in a low speed collision on Friday at Aviemore Railway Station.

Two people were treated in hospital “as a precaution” and an investigation was launched after emergency services rushed to the scene just after 7pm.

Strathspey Railway said that it would not be able to move forward until it had assessed the implications of the incident.

A spokesperson said: “As a consequence of the unfortunate events on Friday, September 29, the Railway is currently reviewing the position with regards to this year’s Festive Services.

“Plans to release tickets for the 2023 Santa Express Services are currently on hold until further notice.

“We have to assess and understand the implications of Friday’s incident and consider any advises arising from the RAIB (Rail Accident Investigation Branch) and ORR (Office of Rail and Road) investigation from which we will move forward.

“As a regulated business, it is the right and proper thing to do.

“Furthermore, staff have been given time out or are busy dealing with refunds and communicating with disappointed customers.”

The Flying Scotsman, owned by the National Railway Museum in York, is due to have a full mechanical inspection after the crash.

The crash was described as a “particularly difficult situation” by the Strathspey Railway.
