Searches continue along Orkney coastline for missing monk ‘presumed dead’ Police Scotland

Police say searches are continuing for a missing monk who disappeared from an Orkney monastery, who is “presumed dead”.

Justin Evans was last seen within Golgotha Monastery at Papa Stronsay shortly before midnight on Saturday.

The 24-year-old, who speaks with a New Zealand accent and was last seen wearing a white robe, is described as being around 6ft tall, with short hair and a dark beard.

Earlier this week, Bishop Hugh Gilbert of the Diocese of Aberdeen said he had learned “with deep sadness” of the presumed death of Evans.

He also said that the police and coastguard have called off their searches; however, Police Scotland has clarified that searches remain ongoing.

Officers said on Thursday that extensive and detailed searches of Papa Stronsay and Stronsay have been carried out, including along the shorelines.

Inspector David Hall said coastal areas on other nearby islands will continue to be searched by local and specialist police, as well as partners, into next week.

He added: “Any further relevant information reported to police about Justin and the circumstances leading up to him going missing will be acted upon.

“At this time there is nothing to suggest any suspicious circumstances or criminality.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident 1573 of Sunday, April 12, 2026.”

The official statement from Bishop Hugh read: “The Diocese has learned with deep sadness of the disappearance and presumed death of Justin Evans, also known as Brother Ignatius, aged 24, a member of the Redemptorist Community on the island of Papa Stronsay.

“It is believed that he came to harm in conditions involving the sea. The local police and coastguard services have now called off their searches.

“Brother Ignatius was known for his humility and charity, and our prayers are with his community and family at this difficult time.”
