An animal sanctuary has rescued ‘the smallest grey seal pup it has ever seen’ after it was found injured on a beach in Shetland.
The pup was found by a dog walker climbing up a beach towards St Ninian’s Isle on Thursday morning.
Scottish SPCA inspector Vhairi Graham attended the scene and found the half-moulted pup was covered in small wounds, thought to have been caused by birds pecking at the seal’s face, body and flippers.
Once transported to Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary, staff were shocked to find the female pup weighed just 9kg.

Believed to be around three or four weeks old, staff named her Lulu.
The sanctuary posted on Facebook: “She is lucky to have been found in time and is now in desperate need of fattening up.
“We have started her on a course of antibiotics and are tube feeding her fish porridge to start with before moving her on to fish pieces shortly.
“Fingers crossed she thrives in our care.”
