A photographer has captured a 13th century castle illuminated by a sunset after a rainstorm.

Eilean Donan Castle, near Dornie, in the Highlands, was snapped by John Pow, 57, when he spotted a break in the clouds.

Mr Pow, from Kirkcaldy, Fife, had been on a photography trip which was hampered by “horrendous’” weather.

But he was thrilled when he saw a break in the clouds and knew there would be a good sunset after the downpour.

He pictured the castle, dubbed Scotland’s “most photographed” with a Loch Alsh glowing orange in the background from the sunset last Friday at 6pm.

The castle sits where three lochs meet, with Loch Duich left, Loch Alsh behind the castle and Loch Long to the right.

Mr Pow said: “I was in Dornie for a photography trip but the weather has been horrendous recently and it has been raining all week.

“I had been trying to get out to take pictures in between rainstorms.

“I was driving and I saw a break in the clouds, and I knew there would likely be nice sunset after the rain.

“I pulled over and set up my camera and waited around 30 minutes to see what would happen.

“I thought I will either get a great picture or not – but I didn’t realise it would be as good as it was with the pinks and the oranges.”
