A man brutally attacked his 69-year-old mother after accusing her of being cheeky.
At the High Court in Glasgow on Friday, Ronald MacIver was found guilty of attempted murder following the incident at a house in Portree, Isle of Skye, on December 31, 2018.
The 50-year-old grabbed his mum by the throat and shook her. She suffered a broken cheekbone and a fractured eye socket in the attack.
The court heard that MacIver phoned 999 and told the operator: “You’d better send the police. I’ve just killed my mother stone dead.
“I just lost my temper. She was being cheeky and I lost my temper. Simple as that.”
In evidence his mother said that she had no memory of the assault.
She told prosecutor Kath Harper: “One minute I was putting shopping away and the next minute I was in Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.”
MacIver denied the charge against him and claimed his mother had been assaulted by someone else.
Judge Lord Sanderson remanded MacIver, who has previous convictions for assault, in custody and will sentence him next month.
Defence counsel Marco Guarino will give his plea in mitigation then.
