Superdrug has apologised after accidentally advertising Sunday opening hours for its store in Stornoway.

The health and beauty retailer had placed a notice on its door saying it will open on December 22 between 12pm and 4pm despite Stornoway being one of the few places to stay shut on a Sunday for religious reasons.

However, a spokesperson for Superdrug said the store had “no plans” to start opening on a Sunday.

They said the sign was put up in “human error” and has since been taken down, adding: “We apologise for any confusion or distress this may have caused.”

The mix-up comes after Tesco bosses revealed controversial plans to open in Stornoway seven days a week last month.

It had previously been one of the only UK stores not to operate seven days a week to reflect local religious sentiment.

Following the decision, religious protestors vowed to boycott Tesco, with some saying it marked the loss of something “very valuable and very precious locally”.

However, the feelings among locals were not unanimous, with hundreds flocking to the Tesco on its first Sunday opening to the public.

Innes Maclean told STV News: “I’m quite happy with it. Why not? It’s our right as UK citizens to attend a shop on Sunday if you want.

“It’s my wish to shop on Sunday if I want. Anyone who doesn’t want to do so, doesn’t have to.

“This is my freedom to attend the shop today.”
