A motorcyclist and a driver have been charged with driving under the influence of drugs in Orkney.

The men, aged 16 and 20, have been charged with drug driving while in control of a 50cc motorcycle and car respectively.

The arrests came as a part of a road safety campaign in the area that detected 34 potential offences over the weekend.

Charges included speeding and mobile phone offences.

Around 65 vehicles were stopped by officers carrying out patrols for Operation CEDAR (Challenge, Educate, Detect and Reduce) between Thursday and Sunday.

The Police Scotland campaign aims to reduce road casualties across the Highlands and Islands.

Officers have issued a plea for drivers to “think very carefully” about the decisions they make.

Road Policing Constable Paul Whitehead said; “Road Safety patrols such as these highlight our commitment to reducing road casualties across the North of Scotland.

“All of the offences detected during these patrols are contributory factors in collisions where people are injured or killed, and our plea is for road users to think very carefully about the decisions they make and their actions whilst using the roads.”
