Two walkers had to be rescued after becoming stuck on a mountain ridge without winter equipment.

The Torridon Mountain Rescue team were called out to Liathach, described as some of the “steepest and most technical” terrain in the area, around 4pm on Monday.

Two walkers had become stuck at the east end of the main ridge without adequate equipment.

The team ascended the steep south side of Liathach to reach the walkers, who were found uninjured but cold.

They were then roped across the narrow ridge and down steep snow slopes to the main path below.

Mountain rescue teams are now warning anyone visiting Scotland’s mountains over the Easter weekend that a full winter kit and knowledge of how to use it are “essential”.

A spokesperson said: “With Easter weekend coming up, a reminder that conditions at sea level are often very different to up high – and that full winter kit and knowledge of how to use it is essential for all the high mountains in our area just now.

“Knowing how to plan a safe winter journey and understand how a map translates to what is actually on the ground is also critical – apps like @alltrails (as in this case) are useful for getting route ideas but are NOT a replacement for a map, compass and ability to use them.”
