An unlikely friendship was captured on film in the Highlands this week when a crab hitched a ride on the back of a jellyfish.
Noel Hawkins spotted the crab on top of the jellyfish in Ullapool Harbour on July 3, and shared the video to his social media pages.
He captioned the video: “A crab joyriding a jellyfish at Ullapool Harbour! I’m not sure how it got there, but the expression ‘Catch a tiger by its tail’ comes to mind…”
The video has gained attention across social media with one user commenting: “Jellyfish can have pets too.”
Jellyfish tend hatch in early spring, and grow rapidly throughout the summer.
They are common sights across Scottish beaches as they are drawn to warmer waters which now include our shoreline.
Various species have been identified off Scotland’s shores, including the Moon, Compass and Lion’s Mane jellyfish.
