Watch as otter bolts into Shetland family home and ransacks kitchen

An otter ransacked a family’s kitchen in Shetland after running into their house and raiding their cupboards.

Donna Mouat had just returned home to South Nesting after going shopping on Friday, February 21 and was preparing to make dinner for her family.

One of her children called to her to say there was a hedgehog in the garden – which turned out to be an otter.

It was feasting on some fish as Donna called her husband, Ryan, to investigate.

The video shows the animal bounding around the kitchen, knocking over plates and bowls before jumping on the counter and ransacking cupboards.

She told STV News: “With great excitement we ran out to see the otter and left the door open – lesson learned.

“The otter shot right in the door and my husband went it to try and gently encourage it out the door.

“It ran out and then right back in through his legs and into the kitchen – that’s when it caused all the chaos.”

The family live near a stream, and believe the otter was a cub, potentially part of a family they had seen at Christmas time.

Donna added: “The kids thought it was hilarious – they were screaming and shouting. That was another reason we kept them outside so they didn’t frighten it.

“There was nothing broken – it was just having to clear up some mess.”
