Passengers left stranded on Mull after their CalMac ferry suffered a fault were given a lift on a 79-year-old paddle steamer.

The Waverley was heading down the Sound of Mull from Tobermory and Salen on the way to Oban on Tuesday when the MV Isle of Mull broke down.

The MV Loch Frisa was able to step in to help while on its 6.40pm sailing, but could not accommodate all of the passengers left on Mull, prompting the paddle steamer’s crew to offer help.

Around 40 foot passengers were picked up at Craignure and returned to Oban.

The Waverley is the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer, which made its first voyage in 1947 when it cruised up Loch Long and Loch Goil to Arrochar.

A spokesperson said: “We were happy to be able to offer this at no cost, given the support CalMac has shown towards Waverley over many years.

“The additional stop at Craignure meant Waverley used three Isle of Mull piers in the one day – a first for the steamer.”

The paddle steamer is currently off South Wales on the next part of her 2026 sailing programme. She will return to Scottish waters on June 25.

The technical issue with the MV Isle of Mull was resolved on Wednesday, and the vessel resumed normal service on Thursday.
