A rare chance has arisen to become the new tenant of the only guest house on the Isle of Canna.

Canna is the westernmost of the Small Isles archipelago, in the Inner Hebrides, it is 4.3 miles long and one mile wide, and it’s two hours away from the mainland port of Mallaig.

It is famous for its natural beauty and wildlife, including golden eagles and puffins, and it offers many walking routes, beautiful beaches, and has over 1000 sites of historic interest.

Canna has been owned by the National Trust for Scotland since 1981.

The lease of Tighard Guest House has now become available and the NTS have begun the search to find the new hosts.

They are looking for somebody with knowledge of rural living, and hospitality and people skills, as the house is one of the few holiday accommodation providers on the island.

Tighard, ‘high house’ in Gaelic, is an Edwardian property, built around 1904.

It sits atop a hill overlooking the harbour and enjoys stunning views to the isles beyond.

It was renovated as a guest house in 2006 and offers three letting bedrooms all year round.

It also includes large garden grounds with a small orchard and woodland.

The private living area is downstairs in Tighard, comprising one double bedroom, a snug, kitchen and wet room, along with communal use of the living room and dining room.

Canna residents take the challenges of island living, such as weather and remoteness, in their stride and the new tenants will become very much part of this small but vibrant community, which in recent times has developed a shop, its own renewable energy scheme, and is currently raising money to build affordable housing.

The National Trust for Scotland expects all applications to be returned by December 31.
