Yellow warning for heavy winds issued in parts of Scotland

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning as blustery conditions are expected to batter parts of northwest Scotland.

Eilean Siar and the Highlands are set to see gusts of up to 80mph, with the weather warning issued between 11am and 4pm on Sunday.

This is expected to cause some travel disruption, especially when it comes to rail, air, road, bus and ferry journeys which could be delayed or cancelled due to the conditions.

It comes after Scotland has seen two storms – Isha and Jocelyn – tear through the country with strong winds, causing chaos in terms of public transport, road travel and general safety.

A second yellow weather warning was issued for the central belt, covering Central, Tayside and Fife, south west Scotland, Lothian and Borders and Strathclyde.

This warning is expected to be in place from 10am to 8pm on Sunday.

STV News weather presenter Philip Petrie said: “Sunday morning starts of foggy, with a lot of low cloud lingering around through the morning for the vast majority of us.

“Once that starts to clear we then see an active cold front moving in from the west bringing in a band of rain, but also strong winds through the latter half of the day.

Overnight the cold front gradually sinks south eastwards, dragging the cloud and rain with it. The winds will only start to ease then, with clearer skies developing behind it. The temperatures will drop away tomorrow night too because the cold front will have introduced colder air.

The warning for strong winds covers parts of the north west Highlands, the Isle of Lewis and parts of Harris where we expect to see gusts of 60-70mph between 11am and 4pm, but possibly up to 80mph gusts.

As we head into next week things turn calmer on Tuesday, with some brightness, before the winds pick up strength again on Wednesday, which is our next watch point. Don’t be surprised if further warnings are issued for Wednesday for the strong winds, with 80mph winds expected across Orkney and Shetland once again.
